I don’t like Sun-days, I don’t like Su-unday-ays….

*NB not as good as the roast we had.

*NB not as good as the roast we had.

Usually, I have a strong aversion to Sundays. Whenever I hear the theme tune to Songs of Praise, Heartbeat or The Antiques Roadshow I inwardly cringe, shudder and sigh all at the same time.  Sundays to me hark of early nights, baths and hair washing, getting stuff ready for school or work, everyone inside and no-one wanting to come out the play, early closing in pubs, having to finish essays or homework. Washing, eating leftovers  for lunch (my mum wasnt big on Sunday roasts) and generally things I disliked. Sundays remind me of hangovers and no money and sitting in alone and bored. Shops shutting early or closed entirely. When I was younger we also had to go to church which I disliked, and generally clean the house, which I disliked even more. If Hallowe’en fell on a Sunday, then no Hallowe’en. People would leave after visiting on a Sunday, leaving our house quiet and dark. Or at least that’s how I felt.

Yesterday, however, I had an alright Sunday. I might even go as far to say it was a Good Sunday. MrC and I slept in til a good half hour past 11, and got up and spoke to our parents, had some chocolate, called our friends, dressed up, went to the pub. At the pub we had a delicious, delicious roast. Me- roast beef, Yorkshire pud, beef gravy, roast potatoes, parsnips and carrots (in goose fat, dontcha know), leeks in cheesy sauce, broccoli, clapshot (not a venereal disease, but mashed carrot and turnip). Absoltely delicious. Oh, and we had deep fried camembert before, and sticky toffee pudding afterwards. And I just had soda water and apple and mango J20s, (also no hangover from night before) and we played our own version of trivial persuit.

Then we went to a friends, saw their baby, watched star wars, ate cake, chatted, went home, watched TV, did things like they do on the discovery channel, watched tv, had tea and crumpets and went to bed.

Great Sunday.

You make me laugh out loud.
Do things like they do on the discover channel… I wonder how many people will catch that innuendo? Nicely played :)
I had a great Sunday too, though I’m right there with you in that I usually dread them as it marks the end of a blissful weekend with friends, family and TDH and instead I have to go out into the corporate, cruel world and deal with people who don’t love me, don’t give a damn about my impending homework, sleepy-eyes, and the fact that I’d rather be at home making Christmas lists, writing Christmas cards and snuggling with my man. Which means Mondays suck too! Great post :)

Good heavens girl – I bet your arteries are rock hard after that meal!

But it sounds quite tasty. Now I want a recipe for sticky toffee pudding.

Looks like Sunday was a good day for eating!

I too got up at 11 or so, and felt the urge for pancakes. So I asked Mrs Runsdeep for her recipe (actually Nigella’s, but who cares) and got stuck in to egg whisking and frying in butter. Fed three of us on that little lot. Then a bit of pottering round the garden tending the veggies, a smidgin’ of actual *work* and then whaddya know, I’m hungry again. This time it was a bit of home-made pasta sauce with the magic ingredients: last night’s red wine and some lemon juice. It was mighty fine, I was pleased with myself.

Sunday evening was pretty cold for early summer in Perth, but I managed to fire up the barbie for sweet potato, onion, halloumi and a few slices of chorizo. On Saturday I bought some chilli sauce made in swaziland from the Oxfam shop, so I smothered that over the taters. My word, it’s hot. That jar of sauce is going to last us a while. Mrs Runsdeep had to give me her potatoes. This was all washed down with James Squire’s golden ale while watching downloaded Have I Got News For You and Nevermind The Buzzcocks. I do miss my UK telly. But… if you get a chance, watch Summer Heights High! I think it’s on BBC2 and I’ve seen it here and laughed myself silly. Watch it, watch it.

I too share the Sunday melancholy – Antiques Roadshow and Last of the Summer Wine generally give me the blues. That’s some UK telly I can live without.

Now that sounds like a most perfect day. I get what your saying about Sundays. Glad you had a great day with great food and great people and great “discovery channel” type of activities. Nice.

@ Nora. Yep, so many better things I’d usually rather be doing on a Sunday…

@ Jan, not as bad as after eating deep fried mars bars. or chip buttys. Will see if I can get you a recipe for Scottish Sticky Toffee pudding… delicious!

@Runsdeep, good to hear from you whether it be here or in an email! and that bbq sounds delicious. Not seen Summer Heights, will see if I can get it on you tube. And I would miss some British TV too… except for those you mention. I forgot about last of the summer wine.

@ Lori, it was a pretty perfect Sunday.

@ Runsdeep, don’t worry you noob!

@MrC, we shoulda taken the camera. I did put in the image tag that it wasn’t as good as what we had. I couldn’t find a pic in 30s that looked right so I used the nearest one. I’m impatient- you know me!
